Malawi: Empowering SMEs for Decent Jobs and Sustainable Economic Development
A “Decent Work Awareness Raising Campaign” was recently completed as part of the EU-funded Zantchito Skills for Jobs Programme, in partnership with Malawi’s Ministry of Labour. This impactful initiative was carried out in the three major cities of Malawi—Lilongwe, Mzuzu, and Blantyre—from 19th May to 13th June 2025.
Over the course of the campaign, 146 workplaces were reached with more than 4,691 workers across Malawi’s thriving SME sector benefiting from the campaign’s positive messaging.
The campaign’s main objective was to boost awareness of decent work principles and labour laws among both employees and employers in SMEs, paving the way for improved compliance, fair labour practices, and ultimately, the creation of more decent jobs for sustainable economic growth.
Efforts focused on promoting the four pillars of decent work:
- Fair and safe labour practices
- Worker freedom
- Equity
- Security and dignity in the workplace
This initiative is closely aligned with the Ministry of Labour’s mission to protect workers’ rights and welfare, while fostering productive employment, social protection, and effective labour market governance. By bridging awareness gaps and encouraging self-compliance with labour laws and standards, the campaign supports building a stronger, more equitable future for Malawi’s workforce.
GOPA Worldwide Consultants is proud to be part of this journey and looks forward to continuing our collaboration in advancing decent work and sustainable development throughout Malawi.
