Uganda: Strengthening Women-Led MSMEs Through Targeted Business Support
To support Uganda’s Green Growth Development Strategy (UGGDS) meant to fast track the implementation of the National Development Plans with focus on “gender” and “green growth”. GIZ WE4D Uganda in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD) is implementing the WEEG-UWEP project with an objective of creating employment, increasing income and improving gender-specific working conditions of the selected women in UWEP funded green business models.
The project is currently in its inception phase and with implementation support from GOPA Worldwide Consultants, a team of Business Development Experts was selected, trained, and deployed across Uganda’s Northern, Western, Eastern, and Central regions to pilot a newly developed Business Diagnostics Tool for assessing the business health in both green and business development aspects. This pilot was conducted with a sample of 58 women groups/Micro, Small and Medium size Enterprises (MSMEs) to assess the tool’s effectiveness in generating useful, actionable data aligned with the project’s indicators.
The successful pilot exercise provided critical feedback that refined the Business Diagnostics Tool, identified key gaps, and informed areas for improvement. As a result, the tool is now being rolled out to selected UWEP women groups in the green sectors across the country. This comprehensive diagnostic exercise is generating valuable insights into the needs and performance of UWEP-supported women groups, which will guide the next phase of the project that is focused on delivering targeted training, mentorship, and coaching to empower women groups in building sustainable, green businesses.
This project is commissioned by the German government with support from, European Union and Norway.
